Plate tectonics is a scientific theory that states the outer layer of earth (lithosphere) is divided into "plates", which are massive chunks of rock that float around on the Earth's surface. Pictured below is a map of the various tectonic plates, each of which are named based on location. Tectonic plates move anywhere from 2-5 centimeters a year.
